What can we learn from Ben Affleck and his “You gotta get up” acceptance speach.

I am not much of a follower of Academy Awards. But i do like to absorb the information of people who are successful and am interested in their viewpoints on how they got there. This i then can hope to help me and other people achieve what they want in life.

So Ben Afflecks acceptance speach when he won the academy award for best director went something like this:

“You have to work harder than you think you possibly can. You can’t hold grudges… it’s hard, but you can’t hold grudges. And it doesn’t matter how you get knocked down in life, because that’s gonna happen. All that happens is you gotta get up.”

He also went on to thank his wife (rather oddly, leading to speculation his marriage was on the rocks) and people in the Hollywood scene for helping him out to realise his dreams.

All such speaches tend to have a specific theme. I felt this one did as well. Especially the theme of harnessing partnerships, whether that be on a personal or professional level. It is important to realise that Rome was not built in a day. Nor was it built by one person. There is no such thing as a one man band. Behind every successful person there is a network of partnerships. This goes for music as well. Look at every successful artist and a team of helpers and back room staff. In Armin Van Buurens documentary it is perfectly illustrated here where even his wife is very involved in his tour scheduling.

But the ability to harness partnerships also comes with the ability to manage partnerships, which is not always easy! Everyone in this world is leveraging for position and often this can lead to tenuous relationships! We all want to get something from this life. We all want to make use of our time limited time on Earth and accumulate our achievements through actions. So invariably from a position of authority you can encounter people wanting something from you or looking after their own agendas. Its life. And his attitude is spot on. Realise it, but don’t bear grudges. The negative energy sucks at you. One of my favourite quotes is, “If you are hell bent on retribution, dig two graves.. one for your subject and one for you”.

Ben Affleck accepting his award. A reward for hard work and not bearing grudges.

Ben Affleck accepting his award. A reward for hard work and not bearing grudges.

I like the theme of hard work. Affleck was very successful prior to winning this award and so his drive to continually produce content and better himself is inspiring. He has achieved already what most people would only dream of achieving, yet he has not rested on his laurels and has continued to work and produce content. He realises this need to work and has a thirst for it. The funny thing is, we all have a thirst for new and interesting content, especially in this day and age. And as we all know if we have created anything, this takes constant time and effort. So working hard to achieve this is something everyone who is successful does. Long hours, early mornings and late evenings. No late night parties. And healthier lifestyles including healthy eating and regular exercising. Who can really produce great content when you are hung over and tired. I know i can’t.

So all in all, its really interesting to hear what people have to say in these speaches. Some people say he has had luck. I say he took his opportunities when they presented and was ready due to his hard work. Things just don’t present themselves on the table and magically appear.
